Senior Software Engineer

ABOUT THE COMPANY

A bit about us: while most companies only want you to buy what they’re selling, the Grommet is focused on helping people discover things worth buying. Through our e-commerce shop and wholesale business, we shine a light on great new products from small businesses and help them compete with the big guys, so the best ideas win. Over the past decade, we have discovered and launched thousands of unique and innovative products, including several household brands like FitBit, IdeaPaint, OtterBox, and SodaStream.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a LAMP stack engineer who has experience with PHP. Working closely with our Product and Design teams, you will design, code, and test new features using our entire tech stack.

Over the next year, our team will be developing the next iteration of our platform from the ground up using highly customized Magento 2 and Laravel. We have an exciting road map where you’ll be working on such projects as implementing an intuitive and responsive UI/UX shopping experience, developing new REST endpoints, creating new billing, shipping, and EDI integrations, integrating with 3rd party social media and marketing services, developing faceted search and suggestion systems, minimizing latency to improve user experience, and meeting data-warehousing and reporting needs, and all of this running in a fast, secure, and monitored cloud environment. Experience in any of these areas is desired, but not required.

We'll consider all applications but our core tech stack is Magento, Laravel, PHP7, MySQL, REST APIs, and JavaScript. Our ideal candidate will have experience developing web applications using these or equivalent technologies. Object-oriented development experience on a large-scale e-commerce website, using modular, extensible frameworks and building a rich user interface using modern web front-end tools is experience we’d love to see.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • 6+ years of professional web development with PHP
  • 3+ years of experience developing for Magento 1 or 2

DESIRED EXPERIENCE

(You don't have to be an expert in all of these things -- there'll be a whole team working with you!)

  • Understanding of relational database concepts, specifically MySQL
  • Demonstrable knowledge of web technologies, including HTML and CSS
  • Experience with Laravel
  • Discipline with writing unit tests
  • Experience using JavaScript on production applications
  • Proficient understanding of Git and working with Github, BitBucket, etc.
  • Experience with creating and maintaining REST APIs
  • Strong grasp of security principles and e-commerce applications

We are mainly looking for someone to work in our offices in Somerville, MA. However, we would consider remote employees who have extensive Magento experience.
